Microsoft Outage:
A recent IT outage caused by a corrupted update from security company Crowdstrike has left the world reeling. Microsoft estimates that approximately 8.5 million computers globally were affected, making this potentially the worst cyber event in history.
Unprecedented Impact of a Corrupted Update
The chaos began when a corrupted update from Crowdstrike caused computers running Windows to crash. While the bug affected less than one percent of all Windows computers, the scale of the disruption was enormous due to the widespread use of Crowdstrike by enterprises running critical services. From Thursday into Friday, flights were grounded, businesses struggled to process card payments, and hospitals and clinics were forced to cancel operations.
Microsoft’s Response and Crowdstrike’s Apology
On its official blog, Microsoft outlined the extent of the issue, highlighting the significant economic and societal impacts. Crowdstrike’s CEO George Kurtz issued an apology late on Friday, stating that a fix had been deployed but warning that it could take some time before all systems return to normal. “I wasn’t that surprised that an accident caused severe global digital disruption,” said Ciaran Martin, former Head of the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre. “I was a little surprised that the cause of it was a software update from a very well-respected cybersecurity company.”
The Fragility of Global Digital Infrastructure
The incident has brought to light the fragility of the global digital infrastructure. “We’ve talked for a long time in the industry about the inherent fragility of foundational parts of the internet,” Martin added. This sentiment was echoed by Sally Walker, former head of cyber at the UK’s intelligence and security organization GCHQ, who emphasized the dependency and vulnerability of modern computer systems. “It does emphasize that we live in a world of dependency and vulnerability and that disruption can and will happen,” she said.
The Role of Malicious Actors
Walker also warned of the potential for malicious actors to exploit the ambiguity and confusion surrounding such outages. The National Cyber Security Centre advised individuals and businesses to be vigilant against phishing attempts. Similarly, the German government’s IT security agency alerted the public to the risks of fake websites, phishing, and other scams in the wake of the outage.
The Global Response and Risk Management
Despite the significant disruption, Walker noted that risk registers have not changed in response to this incident. “Our understanding of what can go wrong or what might go wrong doesn’t change because of an incident like this. The reality is that risk exists every day,” she said. This perspective underscores the importance of robust risk management and preparedness in the face of digital disruptions.
