Digvesh Rathi Celebration Reignites Controversy in IPL 2025

In a high-stakes IPL 2025 match between Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Mumbai Indians (MI) at Wankhede Stadium on April 27, LSG’s leg-spinner Digvesh Rathi dismissed MI opener Ryan Rickelton, who was in formidable form with a rapid 58 off 32 balls. Rathi’s breakthrough came at a crucial juncture, breaking a 55-run partnership and reducing MI to 88/2.

Following the dismissal, Rathi celebrated with his signature ‘notebook’ gesture—mimicking the act of signing a notebook. This celebration, while distinctive, has previously drawn criticism and disciplinary action from the BCCI. Earlier in the season, Rathi was fined 25% of his match fee for a similar celebration against Punjab Kings’ Priyansh Arya.  Despite the penalties, Rathi has continued with the gesture, leading to further fines and accumulating demerit points.

The BCCI has expressed concerns over repeated unsportsmanlike conduct, and Rathi’s actions have sparked debates among fans and commentators. While some view the celebration as a harmless expression of enthusiasm, others see it as provocative.  Rathi’s persistence with the ‘notebook’ celebration, despite warnings, has placed him under scrutiny, with the possibility of a suspension if further infractions occur.

As Rathi continues to make his mark in his debut IPL season, his performances have been impressive, but his celebratory antics remain a contentious topic, highlighting the fine line between personal expression and sportsmanship in professional cricket.
