Why Were Chocolates Recalled Nationwide in the U.S.?

In a surprising and serious move, several chocolate products were recalled across the United States due to food safety concerns. The recalls have triggered consumer warnings and raised questions about food labeling and allergen risks. Here’s what you need to know.

Why the Chocolates Were Recalled

  1. Undeclared Milk Allergen
Multiple chocolate products, including those from Weaver Nut Co. and Lipari Foods’ JLM Dark Chocolate Nonpareils, were found to contain milk proteins that were not listed on the label. This omission poses a serious health risk to individuals with milk allergies, potentially causing severe or even life-threatening allergic reactions.
  2. How the Issue Was Discovered
The problem came to light after a wholesale customer raised concerns about possible contamination. Laboratory tests later confirmed the presence of milk in products labeled as dairy-free.
  3. Scope of the Recall
    • Weaver Nut Co. recalled semi-sweet chocolate nonpareils with various colored candy seeds, sold nationwide under multiple lot numbers.
    • Lipari Foods pulled 14-ounce tubs of JLM Dark Chocolate Nonpareils from stores across the country.
Consumers are advised to check packaging for affected lot codes and return or discard any impacted products.
  4. Health Risk to Consumers
While no illnesses have been reported so far, the Food and Drug Administration emphasized that individuals with milk allergies should avoid the recalled products entirely, as they pose a potentially life-threatening risk.

What Should You Do?

  • Check Your Pantry: Review any recently purchased chocolate products to see if they match the recalled items.
  • Do Not Consume: If you or someone in your household has a milk allergy, do not eat the affected products.
  • Return for Refund: Most retailers will offer a full refund for recalled items.

This nationwide recall highlights the critical importance of accurate food labeling and allergen control in the manufacturing process. Consumers with food sensitivities should stay informed and cautious, especially when consuming packaged treats.
