Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman have expressed their heartfelt condolences following the passing of Pope Francis, the head of the Roman Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State.
In official messages of sympathy, the Saudi leaders conveyed their sorrow over the loss of a prominent global religious figure, extending their solidarity to the Vatican and the global Catholic community.
Pope Francis passed away on Monday at the age of 88, according to a statement released by the Vatican. The pontiff had faced serious health challenges earlier this year, including a lengthy hospitalization due to double pneumonia. Although he showed signs of recovery and was recently discharged, he had continued to rest at his residence in Casa Santa Marta within Vatican City.
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1936, Pope Francis made history in 2013 when he became the first pope from the Americas, as well as the first Jesuit and the first non-European pope in over 1,200 years. His papacy was marked by a focus on humility, interfaith dialogue, social justice, environmental advocacy, and a more inclusive approach to Church leadership.
Throughout his time as pontiff, Pope Francis worked to build bridges between different faiths and emphasized compassion and mercy as central values of the Church. His efforts earned him widespread admiration across religious and political lines, even as he faced challenges within the Vatican and the broader Catholic world.
