Thailand’s 220km High Speed Rail Connecting 3 Airports Launches This July

Thailand’s long-awaited high speed rail project connecting three major international airports — Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi, and U-Tapao — is set to officially launch operations in July 2025, marking a new era in regional transportation and tourism connectivity.

Stretching 220 kilometers, the high-speed rail line is one of Southeast Asia’s most ambitious infrastructure developments, promising faster travel, reduced congestion, and a major economic boost across the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC).

A Game-Changer for Thai Travel

The new high-speed line will connect:

Official Partner

Don Mueang International Airport (North Bangkok)

Suvarnabhumi Airport (Bangkok’s main hub)

U-Tapao Airport (gateway to Pattaya & Eastern Seaboard)

Trains will reach speeds of up to 250 km/h, slashing travel time between Bangkok and U-Tapao from over 2 hours by car to just 45 minutes.

“This project will redefine regional connectivity and position Thailand as a true logistics and travel hub,” said Sak Siam Chidchob, Thailand’s Minister of Transport.

Years in the Making

The project, first approved in 2018 and jointly developed by the Eastern High-Speed Rail Linking Three Airports Co., Ltd. — led by CP Group in partnership with international investors — is part of Thailand’s broader strategy to drive investment and development in the EEC.

The rail line includes nine stations, passing through major urban centers including Bangkok, Chachoengsao, Chonburi, and Rayong.

Boost to Tourism and Business

With three airports now seamlessly linked, Thailand expects a surge in:

Transit tourism, especially from long-haul travelers landing in Bangkok

Domestic and international tourism to coastal destinations like Pattaya and Rayong

Business travel, especially in the EEC, home to special economic zones and tech hubs

“This line isn’t just about speed — it’s about accessibility,” said Dr. Somchai Jittham, an urban planning expert. “Travelers can now land in Bangkok and be at a beach resort or industrial park in under an hour.”

What Travelers Can Expect:

Trains every 30 minutes during peak hours

Business and economy class seating

Wi-Fi, charging ports, and onboard refreshments

Estimated fares: THB 300–700 (USD $8–$20)

Tickets will be bookable online and via mobile app, with integrated connections to Bangkok’s MRT and BTS systems.

Regional Integration on Track

Thailand’s high-speed rail launch also strengthens future regional ties, potentially connecting to:

Laos–China Rail via Nong Khai

Proposed ASEAN high-speed corridors in Malaysia and Singapore

Launch Timeline:

Trial runs: Late June 2025

Public opening: Mid-July 2025

Inauguration ceremony: Expected to be attended by regional leaders and transport officials

The Fast Track to Thailand’s Future

As Thailand prepares to flip the switch on its first fully operational high-speed rail, the project stands as a symbol of post-pandemic recovery, forward-thinking infrastructure, and the kingdom’s growing role as a transportation powerhouse in Asia.

“This is not just a train — it’s the future arriving 250 kilometers per hour,” said Minister Sak Siam.
